Elon Musk says he's stepping back from DOGE

Elon Musk stepped down from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the end of May 2025, as his 130-day term as a special government employee (SGE) expired. Appointed by President Donald Trump to lead DOGE, an advisory body created by executive order on January 20, 2025, Musk aimed to reduce federal spending and streamline government operations. His tenure involved significant cost-cutting measures, including mass layoffs and the near-elimination of agencies like USAID, though his initial $2 trillion savings goal was revised to $1 trillion, with reported savings of around $140-160 billion by April 2025.

Musk’s departure was driven by the SGE time limit, mounting public and political backlash, and a need to focus on Tesla, which faced a 71% profit drop and protests in 2025. Critics, including public policy experts, argued DOGE’s cuts degraded government services, citing longer wait times at veterans’ hospitals and Social Security offices. Supporters, like some conservative analysts, praised DOGE’s spotlight on government waste. Despite stepping down, Musk’s influence persists through allies embedded in federal agencies, and DOGE is set to continue until July 4, 2026. Musk has indicated he will remain involved in a reduced capacity, focusing on his businesses while advising Trump.
